I painted the fabric and drew all the illustrations directly onto cloth; the pieces were then cut many times and reassembled into new configurations. The process of cutting and reassembling many times over, until the original drawings were obliterated, eventually allowed new images to appear.

(Which Way to) Rock Hill Scat

I made this piece to celebrate my beautiful new home, the City of Rock Hill, South Carolina. ”Scat” refers to a form of Jazz singing that I like very much in which improvised, meaningless syllables are sung to a melody. The strong, irregular shapes and stitched lines of this piece recall the sharp lines of the stony hills that gave the city its name.

This piece showcases illustrations drawn directly onto the fabric, screen printing, and all-over free-motion stitching that echoes and complements the drawings. The bound border is also hand-painted. The 2nd and 3rd photos are detail shots.

Juan is a combination of illustration and fiber art. The subject is an actual person from my childhood; I “drew” him from memory using a sewing machine and free-motion stitching.

Thinking back to when, as a teen, I fantasized about what I would do in life, who I might become, where I might go, what I might achieve, led me to put some of those feelings into this piece, not with a sense of regret but, rather, the realization that letting go of some things allowed me to achieve others, perhaps unimaginable at the time.

It’s a wrap!

This is a wrap I made using the needle-felting machine. The fiber is alpaca.

I grabbed a handful of fibers to start and, patiently, needle-felted them until they meshed and locked with one another into ‘something’ other than individual, fly-away hairs. Eventually, from the single to the whole! ’Eventually’ translates into roughly 2.5 hours per square inch.

It is simply a dream to wear and I am quite proud of it. Here are other views, including a detail shot.
